The traditional garden route in South Africa follows the N2-West from the Storms River in the Eastern Cape to Mossel Bay in the Western Cape. This 200km stretch of road has the reputation of being South Africa’s most beautiful route. So much so, that many of the country’s pathways are often neglected and even forgotten. Sometimes, if you just drive these “other” routes slow enough to take it in, you will discover more subtle beauty. It is that less commercial beauty where peace and quiet reign and it often takes a bit of well-worth effort to discover. However these “other” garden routes are often the exact opposite. Their beauty is blatantly obvious and they are rather easy to find. They are just less “out there” and you kind of need to know about them to enjoy them. So here are my favourite less-travelled garden routes in Southern Africa, all in excess of 100 kms (no point in raving about a 10 km mountain pass).

The Mpumalanga Panorama Route

The KZN Midlands Meander

The Namib
